Day of the Dead has been celebrated in the historic Mission district since the early 70s.
Festival of Altars at Garfield Park [Balmy Alley & 25th Street] serves as a community graveyard for the night with expressions of art, music, live performances, and a walking procession through San Francisco’s historical Mission District. Altar creation is invited during the day. Now in its 19th year, SOMArts’ Día de Los Muertos exhibition is well known as one of the most internationally diverse Day of the Dead exhibits. Curated by Rio Yañez and Carolina Quintanilla, this year’s theme, Honoring our Ancestors by Fighting for the Future, reflects on how those we’ve lost have shaped our creative and political work. How does the wisdom and work of the dead show us a path and means to a better future? What about your past must you take to your future?

Elxir 15th/160th Anniversary Party - November 17th

Elixir is celebrating 15 years of running a 160 year-old saloon. In addition it will be a celebration for proprietor of 50 years, H. Joseph Ehrmann. In Memory Of:
René Yañez (19 September 1942 – 29 May 2018)
Yañezwas a visual and performance artist, curator and community activist long associated with the SF Mission. He was a founder of Galería de la Raza, In the early 1970s he was one of the first curators in the United States to introduce Mexico's Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos, encouraging a contemporary focus and a vision that this essential manifestation of the human spirit could act as a template to create an important cultural celebration for the world. He created Rooms for the Dead at the Mission Cultural Center and later moved the popular annual exhibit to SOMAR Cultural Center where he co-curated the multicultural installation with his son Rio Yanez. Interviews with the artist would often see him quote the truism, "We all share death."
