Scooters are not the end of the world

“New things can happen in a good way”

By Brock Keeling  Apr 23,2018

Scooters are an affordable, easy way for folks to get around w/o using a car. They take up massively less space than other vehicles. Let’s get them permitted & avoid negative impacts. Let’s not have a knee-jerk “the sky is falling because something new is happening” reaction. - Sen. Scott Weiner

Spin, Bird and LimeBike have now all issued statements saying they are committed to “working with the city” on the permit process

E-Scooter Rollout Halted

Bird, LimeBike and Spin Get Pushback from City Government
On Monday April 16, 2018 as City Attorney Dennis Herrera issued cease-and-desist orders. Previously, Herrera had sent letters to Bird, LimeBike and Spin, the companies running the scooter operations, ordering them to stop doing business until they take stronger efforts to keep users from riding them on sidewalks, parking them so they block sidewalks, ramps and transits stops and using them without helmets or drivers licenses.

All of those are violations of either city or state law, but in the three weeks since the scooters hit the streets and sidewalks of San Francisco, they’ve become common offenses — and complaints.

"It would be very nice if the tech bros could come in and ask for permission instead of asking for forgiveness,” Peskin said.

Rachel Starr, a spokeswoman for Spin, said the company has been talking with the Metropolitan Transportation Agency since February and supports Supervisor Aaron Peskin’s legislation. If the plan is approved, the MTA could impose a permitting process, and regulations, by early May.

Mayor Announces Crackdown on Mission District Homeless Encampments

The return of tents in the Mission Brings Vow from the Mayor

As in the past, city crisis teams will fan out to parts of the Mission east of South Van Ness Avenue and roughly between 14th and 20th streets, to try to coax an estimated 100 or so tent dwellers into San Francisco’s network of shelter programs. That includes the city’s much-hyped Navigation Centers
For the past three years, the Mission has been subject to repeated sweeps, which often result in campers simply moving a few blocks away or returning in a matter of days or weeks. SF Mayor Mark Farrell said this time will be different.“We are going to have a dedicated team to make sure they don’t come back,”

Maybe it takes a mayor not running for office to do it, but we need to clean up our streets throughout the city. We haven’t been pushing hard enough. We will now.

Making this push, he said, is just part of what he characterized as a “sprint to the finish” of his short term as mayor, before someone wins June’s special election to fill out the late Mayor Ed Lee’s term. It is not, he insisted, part of positioning for a full-term run for mayor in 2019 — which he has repeatedly said he will not do.

Two brazen auto burglary Suspects Busted by Attacking Vehicle Tires
Driver hit the spike strips and shredded his tires

San Francisco Police Department policy requires that officers not chase recklessly fleeing vehicles if it would pose a danger to the public. This allowed the suspects to simply press their pedal to the metal multiple times during an outlandish week-long crime spree.

Plastic Straws Days are Numbered

Paper straws and colored cellophane cocktail straws used to be the only kinds. They work fine, and can be sustainable. No need to use unsustainable plastic for straws. Drink boxes with built in plastic straw need to be redesigned.

Citywide City Owned Internet Service for All Advances
Mayor Mark Farrell is working to lead The City toward creating a citywide fiber-to-the-premises internet service at one gigabit speeds. The project would be developed as a private-public partnership with an initial 15-year agreement. The service is expected to provide a free service to low-income residents as well as free wi-fi services in public places.“The successful bidder will design, build, finance, operate and maintain a citywide fiber network which will connect every home, business, institution in the city and will be capable of gigabit speeds. The next key dates in the process are April 9, when The City will select a “shortlist” of bidders to bring them in for interviews, and the selection of qualified bidders on April 30.

Measure RR to Study 2nd Tube for BART & Standard Gage Track

Fat Issue Is Where Stations would be located
Caltrain and California High-Speed Rail, both of which are expected to eventually reach the Transbay Transit Center in South of Market, have also been mentioned as possible users of a future rail tunnel beneath the bay. Capital Corridors and Amtrak lines could also use the tunnel.
Takeaways

  • Capital $12 billion Estimated minimum cost for a second BART tunnel under the bay

  • 25% Increase in capacity in the current Transbay Tube expected by 2025 due to new, improved equipment

  • $200 million Amount BART has set aside from Measure RR for study and early engineering of a new tunnel

  • Leadership appears to agree that two sizes of tracks and integration of Transbay Transit Center important

  • Why are we only now talking about this as Transbay Transit Center about to Open?

APRIL FOOLS - Los Angeles Fooling Itself About Delta Tunnels

"30 percent of L.A. water that runs through the Delta. The project should be a no-brainer for L.A. But few in L.A. are thinking clearly about water. Instead, the city, under Mayor Eric Garcetti — a smooth-talking optimist full of plans and presidential ambition — has believes it can make transformational changes without much trouble.

Such triumphalism is rooted in the city’s recent winning streak: securing the 2028 Olympic Games, rebuilding its schools, reviving South L.A., transforming downtown into a true center, expanding transit, and getting voters to approve major new dollars for housing the homeless" -- Joe Mathews writes the Connecting California column for Zócalo Public Square.
