What is it about a festival or carnival that brings people together from all walks of life, like no other way? It’s the sights, the sounds, the food, the dancing in the streets, in one big grand party, parade ambiance.

In San Francisco’s sun-drenched, preeminent, Latin Quarter of the Mission District, now in its 39th year, Carnaval San Francisco returns, celebrating Latin American and Caribbean arts and traditions.

Conceived 39 years ago by a group of local musicians, artists and residents eager to bring the spirit of Latin American and Caribbean culture to San Francisco, Carnaval San Francisco has grown to become the largest annual multicultural celebration in California.

Batala Breaks Record for Largest Bateria in SF Carnaval

Batala broke the record for most percussionists performing together in the C'SF parade. A massive reunion of 120 drummers from Batala sister groups all over the world took place from May 23 through May 30, 2016. Batalá SF organized seven days of events that spanned San Francisco and the East Bay--including a wine tour to Napa Valley, a round-robin drumming welcome event at Luka's, drumming and picnicking on beautiful Lake Merrit, learning that nationality and language difference can be breeched by the international language of drumming. The 120 drummers from eighteen sister bands were joined by youth dancers from Rites of Passage and Dimensions Dance Theater as well as many volunteers.

Congratulations to SambaFunk for becoming the first major C'SF to establish residency at the SF Western Addition's African American Art & Cultural Complex @ 762 Fulton St, You can see them in action led by Theo Williams laying down the rhythms for the first dance of the C'SF 2017 King and Queen. They have lots of fun events planned throughout the carnaval season which include good food and music where members can practice their moves and share Art & Culture with other compassionate souls. Join in and attend weekly dance and drum classes, special events, social activities, indoor and outdoor rehearsals, costume construction parties, shopping for accessories and float building Sessions. SambaFunk is following up their 2016 theme which honored the Divine Feminine Intelligence by honoring our mothers. It is through our mothers that each of us exists in being and it is humbling to be able to pay their legacy respect in the form of dance, drums, celebration, and community.
